Engine

3.7-liter, V-6 Engine

Acura's largest engine is so powerful, it rivals many V-8s. This 3.7-liter, VTEC® V-6 dishes up 300 horsepower and 270 lbs.-ft. of torque, while operating with a smoother, more responsive feel, thanks to significant weight reduction measures.

  • Magnesium-alloy cylinder head covers that use hardened aluminum cylinder sleeves help improve vehicle balance and the power-to-weight ratio.
  • A forged crankshaft results in lower weight and increased strength.
  • A high-flow exhaust system increases the engine's power efficiency.
  • The Drive-by-Wire throttle system adjusts throttle response so it can be easy to modulate in slow speeds, yet extremely responsive when high performance is called upon.
  • EPA fuel mileage27 is 16 / 23 mpg (city/highway), which, combined with a 21-gallon fuel capacity, gives the ZDX the potential for attaining a 400-mile or more cruising range.

VTEC

VTEC®, which stands for Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control, is a little like having an on-demand racing camshaft in your engine to give you high rpm power without compromising low rpm torque.

  • When engine speed reaches a designated rpm, the intake valves open deeper and longer to enhance airflow and allow the ZDX to continue to build horsepower at levels where other engines may run out of steam.
  • VTEC works in tandem with the 2-stage manifold system to let the driver enjoy both low-end power around town and abundant reserve power on the open road.

Drive-by-Wire Throttle

Derived from Acura's racing program, the Drive-by-Wire throttle system is a sophisticated electronic system that enables a smooth, powerful response with just the right throttle sensitivity in every driving situation.

  • The system replaces the usual cables and linkages between the accelerator pedal and engine throttle.
  • It factors in data, such as engine rpm, coolant temperature and road speed from various sensors before adjusting the throttle.
  • The system communicates with the transmission to enable quick, seamless gear changes.

High-Flow Exhaust System

The ZDX engine employs a high-flow exhaust system that greatly decreases power-robbing exhaust back pressure.

  • The system uses a wider, low-restriction catalyst.
  • A sophisticated hydro-forming process smoothes the inside of the sharpest bends in the exhaust system so the engine can breathe easier.

Battery Management System

The ZDX has a Battery Management System that can help prevent the inconvenience of a dead or weak battery. The system initially warns you through the MID screen when it detects the battery getting weak and will shut down accessories if it detects the battery may soon be too weak to start the engine.

Drivetrain

Sequential SportShift Automatic

The 2010 ZDX harnesses the power of its V-6 with a new 6-speed Sequential SportShift automatic transmission that increases both performance and fuel efficiency.

  • Specialized logic features such as Grade Logic, Shift Hold and Cornering G Shift Control keep the transmission composed in situations that often trip up conventional transmissions.
  • The steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters deliver quick precise shifts at your fingertips.
  • A tap of the paddle shifter when "D" is selected brings a quick gear change before returning to automatic operation when the ZDX has resumed a steady speed. This allows you to make manual gear changes when needed, such as for passing, without changing in and out of manual mode.
  • For quicker acceleration, select "S," and the transmission allows the engine to rev higher before shifting. Using a paddle shifter in "S" puts the transmission into full manual mode, where you have direct control of all shifting.
  • Hill Start Assist eases starts on inclines. Sensing an uphill grade, the system holds brake pressure momentarily while your foot moves from the brake pedal to the throttle for a smooth, secure start.

Grade Logic, Shift Hold and Cornering G Shift Control Systems

When the transmission is in automatic mode, three shift algorithms are programmed to step in during certain circumstances to avoid the gear hunting that's common to conventional automatics.

  • When encountering a steep uphill or downhill grade, Grade Logic Control will instruct the transmission to hold a lower gear for better climbing or increased downhill engine braking.
  • When aggressive driving is detected, Shift Hold Control will delay upshifting as long as possible to avoid disrupting the chassis or power delivery.
  • When the ZDX takes a curve, Cornering G Shift Control will delay upshifting in order to avoid disturbing the chassis and requiring a second shift change-a downshift-when the throttle is applied at the corner's exit.

Super Handling All-Wheel Drive

Though it has the same all-weather attributes of conventional all-wheel drive, Acura developed its revolutionary Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD®) system to enhance high-performance dry-road handling. The result is enhanced high-performance cornering that simply can't be matched by front, rear, or conventional all-wheel drive systems.

  • The system continuously determines the optimal level of power distribution between the front and rear wheels, and also between the rear wheels.
  • Power distribution is based on an analysis of wheel speed, steering angle, lateral G-force and yaw rate.
  • The system reduces understeer and increases stability by turning the outside rear wheel slightly faster than the rest of the wheels, rotating the vehicle through the turn.

Power Distribution

The Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD®) system uses sensors to read an array of vehicle and road conditions and uses this data to actively distribute power between the front and rear axles and among the rear wheels. By continuously distributing power to the wheels in greatest need, the ZDX handles conditions with impressive poise and agility.

  • Power distribution is based on an analysis of wheel speed, steering angle, lateral G-force and yaw rate.
  • Torque among the rear wheels is distributed by a pair of electromagnetic clutches that can actively direct any combination of power between the two rear wheels in fractions of a second.
  • When cruising in a straight line, up to 90% of the power is sent to the front wheels for better fuel economy.
  • To accommodate shifting weight, up to 70% of effective power can be transferred to the rear wheels during hard cornering-all of which can be directed to the outside wheel if needed.
  • The transitions are seamless, so all you feel is a supremely agile chassis.

Chassis

Integrated Dynamics System

The available Integrated Dynamics System (IDS) can adjust suspension stiffness in a split second, based on driving conditions. This allows the ZDX to remain comfortable during highway cruising, yet firm when the road requires high-performance handling. In addition, the driver can adjust the suspension and steering feel through the Sport and Comfort settings.

  • The dampers-also known as shock absorbers-are filled with a fluid that significantly thickens in the presence of a magnetic field. The stronger the field, the stiffer the damper.
  • Each damper can adjust from soft to race-car stiff in as little as five milliseconds.
  • The Sport setting creates a firmer baseline for the dampers while they continue to adjust according to conditions. Likewise, the setting reduces overall power assist to the steering system for increased road feel, though the assist continues to increase at lower speeds.
  • The IDS is always on whenever the ignition is engaged.

Suspension Systems

The front strut and rear multi-link suspensions are designed to accommodate the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD®) system's unique lateral and forward forces and provide the best balance of handling precision, road isolation and bump-recovery damping.

  • The MacPherson strut front suspension features forged-aluminum lower control arms to reduce unsprung weight.
  • The whole front system is mounted to a subframe that "floats" on rubber mounts to provide road and engine isolation.
  • The front suspension uses fluid-filled bushings to provide superior ride isolation and chassis vibration control.
  • Anti-dive properties keep the body stable during braking.
  • The rear features squeeze-cast aluminum uprights (or "knuckles") to reduce unsprung weight for improved response, while trailing-arm mounts are positioned to reduce suspension squat during acceleration.
  • To further improve steering response, the rear system has been mounted on a separate steel subframe.
  • IDS-equipped models receive revised overall suspension tuning and different rear stabilizer bars.

Steering System

Because steering is a key aspect of the driver-vehicle relationship, Acura engineers spent considerable time raising the quality of the rack-and-pinion steering feedback.

  • The torque-sensing power-assist system varies the level of effort at varying speeds so that steering is firm at high speeds, yet easy and precise in the parking lot.
  • The steering system has been finessed to relay the subtle steering feedback that drivers look for when negotiating curves and other steering maneuvers.
  • The Sport mode on IDS-equipped models reduces overall power assist levels for increased road feel.

Braking System

The brake system is engineered to provide best-in-class braking capability in dry, wet and icy conditions. It is also tuned to provide the precise modulation necessary for the utmost confidence during spirited driving.

  • The ventilated front discs measure 13 inches in diameter and are gripped by dual-piston, cast-iron calipers.
  • The solid rear discs are 13.2 inches with single-piston, cast-iron calipers.
  • To satisfy the enthusiast driver, the brake pedal feel is firm with short brake pedal travel.
  • The anti-lock braking system (ABS) pulses the brake pressure to a wheel if it detects potential lockup.
  • Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) uses the ABS sensors to determine the proportion of brake force to each wheel for increased performance and stability.
  • These and other systems, such as Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) and Brake Assist, are further detailed in the Safety and Security section.

Body Structure

A rigid body structure is essential for a smooth ride, precise handling and a quiet cabin. The ZDX achieves a high level of rigidity by using strong, lightweight and more costly high-tensile steel in the body structure. Key areas include:

  • Roof arches
  • Floor crossmembers
  • Front rails
  • Side body
  • Tailgate opening, which is particularly vulnerable to flex
  • Pounds were also reduced by using aluminum in areas where less weight is required and the strength of steel is not imperative, such as the hood and instrument panel

Smooth & Quiet Ride

Acura first reduced noise vibration and harshness by attacking vibration in the body during the engineering phase, rather than adding sound-insulating materials to the body later.

  • The rear suspension mounts are attached directly to the body for greater rigidity and reduced vibration.
  • The front and rear subframes are extremely stiff, allowing for softer mounting bushings and a further reduction in noise and vibration.
  • To quell the "drumming" noises common to vehicles with open cargo areas, insulating materials were used in critical areas, including those on the front bulkhead, the floor, side body, doors and roof.
  • Windshield noise is reduced as a result of three soft noise-absorbing layers sandwiched between two plates of acoustic glass and thick, 5mm side and rear glass.
  • A unique carpet and padding system further reduces noise intrusion.
  • 27  Based on 2010 EPA mileage estimates, reflecting new EPA fuel economy methods beginning with 2008 models. Use for comparison purposes only. Do not compare to models before 2008. Your actual mileage will vary, depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle.

Seating

Front Seats

The driver and front passenger of the ZDX are each enveloped in a cocoon of fine leather that sweeps across the dash and flows down the center console.

  • The driver enjoys a 10-way adjustable power seat, including a power lumbar support.
  • The front passenger is given similar consideration with an 8-way power adjustable seat.
  • Both front seats offer two levels of heating. With the Advance Package, the front seats can cool as well as heat by drawing air across occupants and into the perforations in the leather, allowing you to quickly reach your desired comfort level.
  • For supreme convenience, the 2-driver automatic memory system is designed to record preferences for the driver's seat, steering wheel and side mirror positions as well as climate control and audio presets.
  • Advanced seat frames and power adjustment features help reduce flex in seat movement, imparting a stable and substantial feel.

Rear Seats

The rear seats feature three-across seating with particular emphasis on the comfort of the outboard seats.

  • When the middle space in the second row is unoccupied, a center armrest can be folded down, providing room for two arms, as well as the retractable dual cup holders.
  • Seats feature adjustable headrests that tilt down to improve rear visibility when seats are unoccupied.
  • The seatbacks fold 60/40 to form a near-flat floor for increased cargo space.

Climate Control

Automatic Climate Control

The ZDX features a dual-zone automatic climate control system that allows the driver, front passenger and rear passengers to adjust their own temperature and airflow settings.

  • When the ZDX detects which remote is entering the driver's side, it will automatically set the driver's preferred climate control settings.
  • The driver can synchronize both climate zones to a dual or single setting when desired.

GPS-linked Temperature Control

When the climate control is in automatic mode and direct sunlight is warming one side of the cabin, the system will automatically adjust the temperature to compensate. The system will track the sun's position to continually adjust the zone temperatures, as needed.

  • The automatic climate control system uses the Acura Navigation System's10 GPS receiver to continually track the vehicle's position relative to the sun.
  • A solar sensor measures the sun's intensity to determine its impact on interior temperature.
  • The GPS-link is completely automatic.

Audio Systems

Acura Premium Audio System

The markings of the audio system controls lie hidden for a clean appearance until a press of the power button brings them all to life.

  • The standard audio system features 266 watts of power and seven speakers, including a subwoofer to produce clearly defined sound throughout the cabin.
  • USB7 Audio Interface for iPod®8 or flash drive enables full operation of the devices through the audio system controls.
  • A 6-disc in-dash CD changer, XM® Radio4 with more than 170 channels of digital programming and near-CD quality sound, and an auxiliary input jack for personal music players are all standard.
  • The CD changer uses a 24-bit D/A converter and can play CD, CD-R/RW, CD-Text, and MP3/WMA formats.
  • A speed-dependent volume control automatically increases the audio gain as road speed increases.

USB Audio Interface with iPod Integration

Acura stays a step ahead of the digital music age with a USB7 connection for interfacing with Apple® iPod®8 players and other USB mass storage devices that contain MP3, WMA6 or AAC music files.

  • On compatible iPods, music selection can be controlled through the audio system, including the steering wheel-mounted controls.

  • An auxiliary input jack can accept connection from any iPod, MP3 player or other audio device.
  • Both the USB and auxiliary inputs are within the center console covered storage area where devices can be conveniently carried and discreetly stored.

Acura/ELS Surround Sound System

Grammy® award-winning recording engineer and producer Elliot Scheiner helped design the Acura/ELS Surround® Premium 10-speaker Sound System to reproduce music as it's heard in the recording studio. The system can play 5.1 surround sound DVD-A discs, the highest-fidelity sound medium available. Surround sound can also be extracted from any stereo digital source, thanks to Dolby®5 Pro Logic® II circuitry. In addition to all the source inputs of the standard ZDX audio system, features of the Acura/ELS system include:

  • 15-gigabyte hard disk drive media storage with shuffle, playlist creation, and an updatable Gracenote® database.
  • DVD-A MP3, WMA6 and DTS-compatible disc player.

  • Almost all functions can be performed by Voice Recognition.
  • Note function allows you to store song information and a 10-second sample as it is aired on an XM® Radio4 station so you can recall it later.

Song By Voice

The Song By Voice feature uses the Voice Recognition system to help the ZDX driver find music from the hard disk drive or a USB7-connected iPod®8 simply by voicing a preference.

  • The system is initialized with either of the commands, "iPod search" or "HDD search," after which you can find your preference by first stating your chosen category, such as: song, artist, album, or genre.
  • Follow your category choice by stating your desired music selection. For example, if "Equilibrium" is the title song of an album, the command "Play song 'Equilibrium'" will play the song, while saying, "Play album 'Equilibrium'" will play the whole album.
  • You can also have the system display lists of artists, albums, and other categories on the navigation screen.

Active Sound Control

Active Sound Control (ASC) can reduce unwanted cabin noise by as much as 10dB, countering it with opposing sound frequencies through the audio system speakers.

  • Two microphones monitor specific frequency ranges that contribute to unwanted noise in the cabin.
  • The ASC system then creates an inverse waveform which, when run through the audio system speakers, cancels out the undesirable frequencies, even when the audio system is turned off.
  • The system is linked to throttle position and engine rpm to provide a quieter cockpit during normal cruising, while allowing the engine's muscular sound to be enjoyed during higher rpm and more spirited driving.

Navigation System

  • With the low beams, the HID lenses allow a more precise beam pattern, increasing road visibility without blinding oncoming drivers.

Blind Spot Information System

The ZDX may be equipped with Acura's new blind spot information system that can assist you when making lane changes.

  • If the system detects a vehicle in an adjacent lane in the ZDX's "alert zone" (approximately from the rear half of the ZDX to half a car-length back), an indicator will appear on that side's windshield pillar.
  • If the driver activates the turn signal in the direction where a vehicle has been detected in an alert zone area, the pillar light will begin to flash.
  • No sounds are emitted by the system, in order to avoid disturbing the driver or passengers.
  • The indicators only light up when the ZDX is traveling above 6 mph, so they stay off when parking, at stop lights, and in stop-and-go traffic.

Multi-view Rear Camera

All 2010 ZDX models come with a rearview camera that automatically produces a display when "reverse" is engaged. The standard system provides a display within the rearview mirror. ZDX models with the navigation system feature three separate views that appear in the navigation screen. You can change the views by pressing the navigation system's interface dial.

  • The normal view is ideal to spot items behind the ZDX that are too low to be seen through the rear window.
  • The wide angle view shows a 170° view behind the ZDX, which is perfect for spotting approaching vehicles or pedestrians when backing out of parking spots.
  • The top-down view is useful for parallel parking or lining up a trailer hitch.
  • Yellow guidelines help guide your trajectory and judge distances. The closest guideline indicates clearance for opening the power tailgate.

Storage

Cargo Area

Your belongings never had it so good before this meticulously designed and lavishly finished cargo area.

  • The tailgate provides easy access to over 26 cu.ft. of storage behind the back seats.
  • Loop carpeting covers the floor, sides and rear seatbacks.
  • A brushed metal door-pull on the floor gives access to a wide, hidden cargo area. Gas struts keep the access panel open as you load items.
  • Additional brushed metal door-pulls on each side of the cargo area open panels that reveal additional hidden storage areas. The panels can be removed to widen the overall storage space for items such as golf bags.
  • Lowering the 60/40 split rear seatbacks provides a near-flat floor and increases the cargo space to over 55 cu. ft.
  • Chrome-finished cargo loops at each corner help keep cargo secure.

Power Tailgate

Press a button on the key fob, and the tailgate will automatically open for you. And when you're finished loading or unloading, just press the button again and it powers down and latches.

  • The tailgate will also activate from a button on the dashboard, as well as by the tailgate handle.
  • In the event of a power failure, the tailgate can be raised and lowered manually.
  • When opening or closing, the tailgate will automatically reverse itself if it encounters any obstruction.

Cabin Storage

There are four separate storage areas within reach of the driver.

  • A sliding tray at the front of the center armrest provides a perfect place where a small item such as an iPod® can be easily accessed or hidden from view, even while it's connected to the USB port or auxiliary audio input.
  • A button on either side opens the main center console storage area, which is perfect for storing CDs and other personal items.
  • A drop-down pocket for sunglasses can be accessed overhead.
  • The door panel features map storage and an area suitable for a water bottle.
  • The glove box has a shelf to hold the owner's manual and other documents.

Braking & Stability

Braking Systems

The ZDX disc brakes are backed up by several sophisticated electronic systems to provide you with robust braking under any circumstance.

  • The anti-lock braking system (ABS) helps you retain steering control in emergency braking by preventing the wheels from locking up, while allowing them to achieve their maximum level of stopping power.
  • The Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) system uses the ABS system to direct braking power among the four wheels, depending on their load, to help optimize braking effectiveness.
  • The Brake Assist system detects emergency braking by the driver by monitoring the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed and stepping in to ensure the ABS system is activated-terminating immediately upon release of the brake pedal.

Collision Mitigation Braking System

To help reduce the likelihood of injury in a frontal impact, the Advance Package includes the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS).

  • Powered by a radar transmitter mounted in the ZDX grille, a signal is constantly transmitted and the return signal is evaluated, determining the distance and closing speed to vehicles that lie directly ahead.
  • If a collision is possible, the system will send audio and visual alerts to warn the driver.
  • If the driver does not take action to reduce speed, the CMBS will automatically tug at the driver's seat belt and begin light braking.
  • When the system senses that a frontal collision is unavoidable, and even if no prior alerts have been given, the front seat belts tighten, and strong braking is automatically applied to help reduce the impact velocity and collision force.
  • The goal of the CMBS system is to alert the driver to apply the brakes. It is not alone expected to brake the vehicle sufficiently to avoid a collision.

Vehicle Stability Assist

The Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®)12 system monitors stability factors to detect oversteer or understeer, and if detected, VSA uses a series of the ZDX systems to avoid the problem.

  • VSA continually monitors vehicle speed, throttle position, individual wheel speeds, steering angle and vehicle yaw rate.
  • If potential oversteer or understeer is detected, the system will first use the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD®) to redirect power among the front wheels and each of the rear wheels to maintain stability.
  • If using SH-AWD is insufficient, the system will reduce engine torque and use the anti-lock braking system (ABS) to apply brakes to each wheel as needed to help stabilize the vehicle.
  • VSA interacts with the Integrated Dynamic System on models equipped with the Advance Package. When called upon by the VSA, the adjustable dampers will shift to a suspension setting that best increases the likelihood of maintaining traction until VSA disengages.
  • In all cases, VSA response is so quick that the instability may be corrected before the driver even knows it's occurring.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Since an under-inflated tire impedes handling and can be a safety hazard, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) uses pressure sensors mounted in each wheel that send readings to a central electronic control unit. The system then evaluates whether the pressure is up to an acceptable level.

  • If a reading is significantly below the recommended level, the ZDX will alert the driver through the Multi-Information Display (MID) located on the instrument panel.
  • The problem tire will be indicated, along with the individual pressure, for all four tires.
  • The pressure display can be accessed anytime using the MID controls on the steering wheel.
  • As useful as TPMS is, it is still recommended that you manually check your tires with a gauge on a regular basis.

Body Structure

Advanced Compatibility Engineering

Acura utilizes Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure to enhance occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes.

  • The ACE design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle.
  • This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash.

Restraint Systems

Airbag System

The ZDX is equipped with a sophisticated 6-airbag system, which includes two front, two front side, and two side curtain airbags with coverage for the front and outboard rear seats. Advanced sensors and inflator systems are designed so that the airbags deploy with timing and force appropriate to the conditions.

  • The ZDX is equipped with dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags (SRS). If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates depending on crash severity, seat belt usage and other factors. Frontal airbags are designed to supplement the seat belts to help reduce the likelihood of head and upper body injuries in frontal crashes.
  • Sensors in the front passenger seat determine if it is empty or if the passenger is too small for the passenger's front airbag to deploy safely, and disengage the front passenger's front airbag, if necessary.
  • The front passenger seat is equipped with the Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), which uses sensors in the seatback to determine the height and position of the passenger. The system will deactivate the passenger's front-side airbag if a child or a small-statured adult is leaning into the airbag deployment path.
  • In a sufficient side impact, side curtain airbags deploy downward from just above the doorframes on the impacted side to help protect both front and outboard rear seat occupants.

Seat Belts & Active Front Head Restraints

All five seating positions in the ZDX have 3-point belts. The front belts are equipped with automatic tensioning and load-limiter systems, and the front seats are equipped with active head restraints.

  • Automatic tensioning belts react in the first milliseconds of an impact to automatically tighten the front belts and help hold the individual in position against the seatback.
  • To help prevent the automatic tensioning belt from causing undue pressure on the chest, load limiters slightly relieve belt tension, as needed, to help soften the force.
  • In a rear-end collision, a front seat occupant's body will be pushed against the seatback, and the pressure to the seatback is transmitted from the lumbar plate, pushing the head restraint upward and forward to reduce the gap between the occupant's head and seat head restraint.
  • Impact forces on the head, neck and spine are diminished, helping to reduce the likelihood of whiplash injuries for front seat occupants.

Child Safety

Child Safety

The ZDX has several features addressing child safety, from sophisticated airbag sensors to anchors that secure child seats.

  • The Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) utilizes sensors in the front passenger's seatback to detect if the occupant is a child or small-statured adult.
  • The passenger front side airbag will deactivate if a child or a small-statured adult is leaning into the airbag deployment path.
  • All windows and the power moonroof have an auto-reverse feature that prevents them from closing if an obstacle is encountered.
  • LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) anchors plus upper-tether anchors in the rear seat allow LATCH-compatible child seats to be installed in the outboard positions without the use of seat belts.

Security

Security

Like every Acura model, the ZDX comes equipped with a security system. In the event of a break-in, the following events will occur:

  • The ignition will be disabled.
  • The horn will sound.
  • The lights will flash.
  • 12  VSA is not a substitute for safe driving. It cannot correct the vehicle's course in every situation or compensate for reckless driving. Control of the vehicle always remains with the driver.

Ownership & Services

Maintenance Minder System

Rather than using a static table of time and mileage to keep track of maintenance, the ZDX Maintenance Minder system calculates service needs based on how the vehicle is driven-not just how many miles.

  • It checks engine operating conditions, such as weather extremes, stop-and-start traffic and frequent short trips.
  • It helps coordinate oil service dates and other maintenance check-ups to minimize your trips to the service department.
